Welcome to before i snap, I’m Heather! I’m a SAHM to 2 little guys, B (6 yo) and CJ (2 yo). My husband Matt and I have been married for almost 10 years now, where does the time go?! Oh, and we have an obnoxious maltipoo named Tinely too.

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, then I lived downtown proper for almost 10 years post-college, while I worked on at an advertising agency. We moved to NorCal in 2010 for my husband’s job and it was an amazing adventure! We returned to Chicago (crazy, I know!) in 2014 and are still getting reacquainted. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the cold, even though I lived here for 32 years!

I have been blogging since 2008. My husband bought me my first domain when I was pregnant with my oldest and we started blogging about our journey to becoming parents. It was wonderful to keep the blog going while we were in CA, so that our family and friends in the midwest could keep up with our son while we were away. But I always wanted to write more…

In 2012, I started a blog called Mama Dish with 6 of my closest friends from high school, as a way for us to share our lives with each other since we lived all over the world. But not everyone gets bit by the blogging bug, and eventually it ran its course. It was fun while it lasted though and I knew I wanted to keep blogging, but with a different focus.

I have been taking photos my whole life. I have more photo albums than I can count (remember when people used to print photos?!) After B was born, we invested in our first DSLR and I took thousands and thousands of pictures. I liked what I was seeing, but I knew they could be so much better. I just needed time to invest in learning.

Fast forward to 2014/2015. I finally decided to seriously commit to photography. I upgraded my camera, started investing in new lenses, and signed up for my first professionally taught class. It seemed like the perfect time to marry my love of photography with my love of blogging, so before i snap was born.

This blog is about my photography journey– getting more confident behind the camera, getting deeper knowledge of different equipment and how/when to use it, and gaining a better understanding of lighting, technical details, editing, and how to shoot in different situations. Phew!

** I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL ** I am a student. A photographer-in-training. I am here to share my experiences of my own personal growth, and who knows, maybe I’ll help someone else along the way. If you have a constructive comment about my photos, PLEASE share your thoughts. That’s how I’ll learn. But let’s play nice!

Besides photography, I have a lot of other interests. My family (which will be painfully obvious, apologies in advance!), crafting, party planning, home organization, and cooking, to name a few. I may post about them from time to time. I hope you’ll like that too.

Thank you for stopping by my little space in the blogosphere, I’m so glad you’re here.
